Michis in the game: Chabelita

By Jorge

Chabelita is a lovely 7 years old furry cat. Chabelita is a long-haired domestic cat, and quite possibly a black Maine Coon or a Maine Coon mix; given the fluffy ruff, bushy tail, and overall body structure. If the cat shows tufted ears, large size, and a water-resistant double coat, the Maine Coon lineage becomes even stronger.

Chabelita has the following physical characteristics:

  • Medium to large body, solid build
  • Pointed ears without extreme tufting visible (not as long as lynx tips)
  • Full, long black fur, with a fluffy ruff around the neck and a bushy tail
  • Yellow‑gold eyes that contrast nicely with the dark coat
  •

Breeds like Ragamuffin or Siberian may show similar fluff but usually have distinct softer temperament pattern.

    Chabelita's Possible Breed History

    Maine Coon (Black)

Chabelita is a domestic cat, but she is a strong candidate to be descendant from a Main Coon. These cats are known for having these characteristics:

    • Thick, double-layered coat, especially dense around the neck and flanks

    • Large, rectangular build with bushy tails and tufted ears

    • Usually have golden or green eyes, paired with water-resistant fur

Maine Coon males often weigh 6-8 kg, females around 5.5 kg or less (1). Chabelita's structure and coat closely align with Maine Coon traits.

    Domestic Longhair (Black)

These are mixed-breed cats with long coats. They’re not a specific breed, but they:

    • Can closely resemble Maine Coon looks

    • Vary widely in build, coat, and personality

    • Are very common, especially among household pets with no pedigree

Chabelita needs a lot of care and attention due to her long fur, to prevent her to have fleas or other problems, her mom pays a lot of attention on her wellbeing and health.

In case you have a long haired cat or if you plan to have one, here’s a thorough guide to caring for a cat with the characteristics of Chabelita; (most likely a long‑haired cat such as a Maine Coon or a domestic longhair mix). These abundant, fluffy coats and sturdy build require dedicated grooming and care.

    Grooming & Coat Care

    • Brushing Frequency. Brush daily, especially during seasonal shedding, to prevent tangles and mats. Even brushing 2–3 times per week may suffice outside those peak periods, but daily is ideal in spring and fall (2). Chabelita's mom brushes her twice per week.

    • Tools to Use
      Use a combination:

      • A slicker brush for removing loose hair and surface tangles

      • A wide-toothed comb (e.g. greyhound comb) for deeper grooming

      • Optionally a de-matting comb or undercoat rake for stubborn mats, especially around the belly, armpits, and neck (in Spanish 3)

    • Conditioning Sprays & Dematting Tools
Using a cat-safe detangler or conditioning spray helps soften fur and reduce breakage before combing. Detangle gently, especially in dense areas like the undercoat

    • Mats: Mats can be painful and cause skin issues. Work them out carefully with fingers or a dematting comb; never cut mats with scissors unless you have professional training. Severe mats may require a groomer or vet visit

    Bathing & Hygiene

    • Bathing Schedule: Most long-haired cats require a bath every 4–8 weeks, though frequency should align with lifestyle, coat condition, and tolerance for water.

    • How to Bathe: Brush thoroughly before bathing. Use lukewarm water and a mild cat shampoo. Rinse thoroughly, towel-dry, and optionally use a low-heat dryer if your cat can tolerate it

Chabelita's mom says that Chabelita takes a bath every 8 weeks.

    Nail, Ear & Dental Care

    • Nail Trimming: Trim every 2–4 weeks to prevent overgrowth. Avoid the pink quick and make grooming positive with treats.

    • Ear Cleanin: Weekly inspection and cleaning with a vet-approved cleanser can help prevent wax buildup and infections

    • Dental Health: Brush teeth 2–3 times a week using feline toothpaste and toothbrush. Dental treats or diets can also support oral health and reduce plaque

Chabelita's mom states that she takes her to the veterynary 2 per year, to check on her health and have a control over her needs. All in control, all in love.

    Nutrition & Hydration

    • Diet: Provide a high-protein, meat-based diet (≥ 50% protein) rich in Omega‑3 fatty acids. These nutrients support coat health and reduce shedding and hairballs.

    • Hydration: Ensure constant access to fresh water. Dehydration can lead to poor skin and coat condition and increased shedding

    Exercise & Mental Enrichment

    • Activity Needs: As likely energetic and intelligent cats, regular mental and physical stimulation is essential. Interactive time, puzzle feeders, cat trees, and toys can keep them healthy and entertained

As you can see from the picture, Chabelita is always ready to play and keep a healthy shape! Muscles and reflexes must be worked out. Also goes for humans.

    Shedding & Cleaning Advice

    • Hair Around the House: Even with daily brushing, shedding is significant: vacuum frequently, use lint rollers, and consider air purifiers to reduce hair and dander accumulation

     Recommended Care Routine

    Task

    Frequency

    Brushing/grooming

    Daily (2–3× per week OK)

    Bathing

    Every 4–8 weeks

    Nail trimming

    Every 2–4 weeks

    Ear cleaning

    Weekly

    In Summary

A cat with long, dense black fur (like a Maine Coon or long-haired mix) requires consistent brushing, occasional baths, regular hygiene care, a nutrition-rich diet, and plenty of social and physical activity. With the right routine, you’ll help maintain healthy skin, reduce mats, prevent hairballs, and keep your cat comfortable and happy.

Anyway, these are general guides about a normal care of your cad, ALWAYS consult a veterinary to verigy what can of diet needs your cat! Don't just follow blindly what a blog says or an internet consultation says (even if it is a trustworthy website with expertise in the veterinari field). Always check with a veterinary (or several) about your pet's needs.
